This June, Go South Coast marked Clean Air Day by offering heavily discounted travel to people living in and visiting our southern towns and cities.
Bluestar, Morebus, Salisbury Reds, Swindon's Bus Company and Southern Vectis offered passengers a full Dayrider ticket for £1 - encouraging them to leave their cars at home for the day and catch the bus instead.
“This meant people were able to travel on any of our services for the whole of Clean Air day for less than it costs to park for an hour in many of the south's car parks,” said Go South Coast head of communications, Nikki Honer.
“Go South Coast is committed to helping improve the quality of air we breathe in the south, and we have been working on this in a number of ways - from investing in a new fleet of greener vehicles to trialling the World’s first air filtering bus.
“A double decker bus has the potential to take up to 75 cars off the road, and we wanted to encourage local people to leave their own vehicles at home for this day in the hope they may for just one day a week in the future.
“Bus travel has changed beyond recognition over recent years, and those who haven’t travelled with us recently will be amazed at the enhancements we’ve made. Our new buses are more frequent, have more comfortable seating, offer free Wifi and USB charging points for smartphone and tablet users, accept mobile phone payments, as well as contactless and they sport the very latest Euro 6 low emissions engines.
“We hope our Clean Air Day offer encouraged more people to take the bus. If we can convert some car users, it could make a huge difference to the local environment in the long term, as well as helping ease the cities congestion issues.”
The initiative proved a huge success with over 5,000 car miles being saved by the swap!
